School Residency Curriculum
PROGRAM FORMAT
We
will work with each school on an individual basis to provide a workshop
format that would be most suitable to the school via the following
workshop formats.
Workshop Description
We
will be available for consultation and support with specific projects
throughout the school year. All instruments and necessary staff for
workshops will be provided by us. Workshops will be specially designed
after consultation with schools.
Special NOTE: for the Costume Design Workshop: We
will supply the designs and templates for initial costume design and
construction, however, individual schools will be asked to provide
paper and natural materials, and in some instances, fabrics and trim
for more advanced costume production.
Workshop Series:
1. Introduction to the Steeldrum
Comprehensive overview on the history of the Steeldrum
Provide introduction to chords and timing
Introduction to percussion and how the "Engine Room" of the band functions
Formation of Steeldrum Band (Hands-on Playing)
Public Performing (Concerts and Recitals)
2. Introduction to the Caribbean
History and Geography of the Caribbean
Music and Dance:
History
Performance (Calypso, steeldrums, dance, etc.)
3. Introduction to Carnival
History of Carnival
Costume making and display
Themes and Designs (Influence of various cultures and designs)
Performance (Parade/mini-carnival presentation)
Depending on the selected workshop, students will be able to:
1. Identify notes on the steeldrum
2. Play melody and chords on the steeldrum
3. Identify Caribbean Islands and their gifts to the World
4. Identify Caribbean Islands with links to the United States
5. Pass simple test on historical relationship between Caribbean Islands and United States
6. Create theme and decorate school banner for parade presentation
7. Create school theme and decorate school - Caribbean style
8. Design and make costumes utilizing natural materials and paper
products (older students in Art/Home Economics may sew costumes)
